Model recreates iconic photo shoot to highlight diversity problem

Model Deddeh Howard has launched a project Black Mirror to challenge the model industry. In her project she recreates famous photo shoot by putting herself instead of the white models.

The aim of the project is to raise awareness to the lack of diversity within the modelling/fashion industry. The modelling industry has always faced criticisms for the underrepresentation of ethnic models used by big designer’s brand.

A recent survey found that during Fall 2016 seasons that less than 25 percent of the models cast where from ethnic minorities, with New York fashion week being the most diverse (31.9%).

Debbeh wants to highlight on how black girls are invisible in the fashion industry , on her website she said “when growing up as a girl I always wondered why the big brands such as Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Guess and many others rarely seen to use a black model.”

“More equal visibility of all races, being it white, black, Asian, Latino etc would help all of us believing in our potential.”
